Maine Moose Hunt Info
Question:
Just got my Maine Moose Hunt application. Was wondering what the thoughts on the best areas for moose are? As a non-resident, I know my chances are slim of drawing a permit, but I’d still like to plan a little in case I did get one. I’d like to know what the particulars of the habitat is for the different areas or are they all alike? Also, how much is the application fee? I know it says here about the cost for extra chances, but other than that do you have to submit a fee? Looks like if i wanted 6 chances it’d cost me $30, is this correct? Can’t seem to find where it says any different. I’d appreciate any help you could give on this subject. Donnie, I have hunted the SC zone and the S zone. In the SC zone we saw many moose in 5 days, and ended up taking a large double shovel bull. In the S zone, we took a medium bull after 3 hard days of hunting. The reason for the difference, that the bulls down east are poached quite a bit and are much more wary. That does seem to be the case, since there was lots of moose sign around every morning, and the one I did kill was running as soon as he saw us. Danny killed one this year in the NW zone with his muzzleloader, but told me that he only saw two moose. One almost turned over his canoe, and the other he called into about 15 feet. We had bulls come to calls in the S zone last year, but they would not come out into the open, always circling to pick up our scent, after daylight. Generally, you want to find open cuts about 2 years old, with poplar in the SC or C, or striped maple down east. The trick will be catching a bull in the open, where you can get to him, cause the fun starts when that 1000 to 1500 lb bull hits the ground. Use enough gun, cause if he runs, he’ll go right in a swamp, and then you will be sorry unless yopu have a skidder handy. If you are bowhunting, call from the back of cuts or around swamp holes. The reason is that they will come in closer. If you call from out in the open, a lot of them don’t want to come in closer than 50 yards, although thats not always true. The C zone is very good, with the SC being pretty good as well. The northern zones are have the cuts pretty grown up…you cant see them so you will have to learn to call or hire a guide who can call and who knows how to locate the best cuts. If you are bowhunting, and you are calling, I recommend a backup weapon , either carried by your sub-permitee or a heavy handgun on your person. The herd bulls take it personally if you call like a bull in the peak of the rut, and things can get a little dicy if you cow call, and he runs out and finds that you are not the cow of his dreams. Its a great hunt if you can get a tag. Best of luck in the draw, as long as you don’t get my tag.
