Grouse question

Question:

I haven’t heard of a "Grouse house", but I have heard of "Gallinaceous guzzlers."  Guzzlers are designed to capture and contain condensation and precipitation for grouse to drink.  They are used to increase habitat suitability in arid areas by providing drinking water. I read somewhere but can’t remember where that it is possible to build grouse houses.  If anyone could point me towards a source it would be appreciated.  I am looking to increase the local population to huntable levels on a friends farm but with no place to hide the grouse as sitting ducks for natural preditors.  any ideas Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

I really doubt that this will work as grouse are ground nesters and wont use hollow trees or nest boxes like wood ducks do.  The best thing you can do for the grouse is to create habitat.  With your friend’s permission, selectively cut the wood lot so that there is a good mixture of young forest, mast producing trees such as beech and white oak, Aspen for winter feeding and a few grassy open areas for insect production in the summer so the young can eat grasshoppers etc.  Establish some blackberry and raspberry patches along with apple trees and cherries. Think food, cover, winter shelter, all with edges while trying to establish the habitat.  The other thing you can do is legally keep the predators down by trapping them and hunting them.  It will be a lot of work, but you should see more than just the grouse population rise as this will benefit other game animals as well.  Good luck.
