Advice needed buying a gun…

Question:

Hi there, This is my first time hunting.  I am looking forward to hunt deers in PA this season.  I need some advice to which gun I should purchase.  I am college student and hence my budget is 200-300.  ANy help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Cheers Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

My immediate response is, in that price range, you need a Winchester 94 or Marlin 336 lever action .30-30.  I assume you’re brush hunting, but even in more open spaces, you can apply "sneakiness" and make it work for you. They run about $260 to $280 new at the local discount/sporting goods chains.  That’ll leave ya at least $20 bucks for a couple boxes of ammo. Hary, I always recommend that new hunters, or old hunters thinking of buying new guns, first purchase a copy of _Shots At Big Game_ by Craig Boddington as published by Safari Press.  It is an excellent resource for folks who plan to use rifles on big game in North America. I’m not familiar with PA game regulations, but if average sorts of centerfire rifles and cartridges are legal I’d recommend you look for a Savage 110 bolt action rifle at your local Walmart, or equivalent.  Such discount outlets routinely offer specials this time of year on a package deal involving the Savage rifle, scope, and mounts.  As for caliber, most anything between .243 and .30′06 will likely do, but the 7mm-08 Remington or the .270 Winchester get high marks for easy availability, relatively low recoil, good accuracy, and reliable effect on big game.  Good hunting! — Michael Brady Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING
