Canes, eBay and a Challenge
Question:
>I just found it kinda poetic that a >twisted old piece of wood ended up with a twisted (in more ways tchan one) >old arthritic lady
My mom has a cane she made herself with my father’s help. It is made from the wood stem of some *very* old ivy. (I know, you didn’t think ivy would make anything wood-like, did you?) Well, seems if the stuff gets old enough, it becomes like wood, but very VERY twisted and knarled. My mom still has it. It is particularly interesting because, even though it is pretty thick, it is very light, unexpectedly so. Best regards,

Didn’t have one at the 99 Gimpfest/RAunion up at Woody’s place in Maine. Just what is this "challenge" all about? > Well, I intend to win in Iowa. So there’s > the challenge. I dare anyone to beat my new canes in Iowa.
By what standard are canes judged? Who are the judges? May I bring, presuming I will attend, the one I have from Austria. It if rather interesting and has a very nice metal point on it. It is for use when walking on ice or packed snow in some of those Alpine villages and their cobbled streets. Best, Larry — Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Didn’t have any Lobster boys either, but didn’t we have fun? Thanks to you, we had plenty of chocolate. <G> I think that’s the best gimpfest I ever attended. You drove all the way from Florida! Donna, hosted that neat porch party with that gourmet bologna, what was the name of it? Trail? We need to have another one at Woody’s place! We all had a great time and that was a neat place for a gimpfest. Great memories… Gloria — Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).

Basically, it’s who has the wildest, craziest, or most interesting cane. All in attendance vote to chose a winner. OK, now that you have thrown your hat in the ring, you have to do two things. First, you have to stick around at least another year, and second, you have to come to Iowa! So how are you feeling anyway? Walt

Shoot. My mom just tossed great lengths of English ivy that finally died enough to get it down. (It’s been trying to overrun a huge 200 year old live oak for years. They finally cut out a couple feet of the lower part of the vines so it couldn’t reconnect and revive.) I well know how large those vines can get. We could have made some pretty neat canes out of it all. Hmmmmm, maybe I’ll drop her a line and ask if she has any more large vines hanging out somewhere on her 2 acres. I dont post often, but this time a good story is screaming to be told. I have my 82 yr old fathers cane which there is a good story behind. One fall, while he was hunting, he came across a bent, twisted sassafrass limb. Dad is rather creative and sees things that most of us tend to over look most times. He thought he could make something out of it, but it needed to ‘dry out’ for a while, so he tied it to an old farmers fence to weather. He left it there and forgot about it until the next hunting season when he ran across it again. At that point, he brought it home, stipped it down and smoothed it by hand after which he rubbed it with linseed oil (or somekind of oil…I am not a woodworker so I dont understand this process). It is the best cane I could ever ask for… I just found it kinda poetic that a twisted old piece of wood ended up with a twisted (in more ways tchan one) old arthritic lady

Walt, I also but (I mean bought <g>) my cane on ebay. It’s pretty, comfortable to hold, and stylish, I think. But now I’m gonna have to go back to ebay to check em out. I may not be able to resist this challenge, ya know. Next year in Iowa. — Di "May all your weeds be wildflowers." Just thought I would mention that I have been able to but two really nice canes on eBay recently for far less than you would pay in a store. So, if someone is looking for a cane, go to eBay and try it out. Now, the challenge. As all you old-timers know, we have a cane challenge at every gimpfest. Well, I intend to win in Iowa. So there’s the challenge. I dare anyone to beat my new canes in Iowa. But there’s a catch – you have to come to the gimpfest to try. See you there! Walt — Walt Hanks, C.H.E.S.
