What to use the see crosshairs at night?

Question:

I went fox hunting the other night, but I could not use my rifle because I could not see my crosshairs.  I have fine crosshairs with a 1/4 minute dot.  My friend had duplex crosshairs and he could see his just fine.  Is there something I can get that will enable me to see my crosshairs at night?  I really don’t want to get another scope.  I just bought this one for groundhog hunting and it worked great.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance. Donny

Cabella’s used to sell (and may still) a little gizmo that mounted on to the ocular (eye lens) of a standard scope.  The device used one AA battery and a standard buld.  From this a red fibre-optic carried the light and shone a red light into the scope through the ocular.  The idea being that the reticle (cross hair) reflects the red light back to your eye.  Well, I bought one of these (about US$10) and tried it.  It wasn’t spectacular and, as I didn’t really need it with my duplex reticle for rabbit shooting, I stopped using it.  For $10, you might like to give it a go. –Jonathan Jonathan Spencer — forensic firearms examiner Mountjoy Research Centre, Durham, England, DH1 3UR tel: +44 191 386 6107   fax: +44 191 383 0686

I used to shoot rats out of the garden with an air rifle, when I lived in DC. We used 5-7 c cell mag lights held under the barrels, with red cellophane (transparencies from an office store) taped over them. It didn’t really illumenate the rats, which were 25-40 yds out, but did show up  the cross hairs. Jay
