Hog hunting in California
Question:
I would like to hunt Wild Boar for the first time. I am probably going to do it in the Central California region. Does anyone have any suggestions for a private ranch hunt? I figure that for my first hunt I would use a guide or private ranch package. Also, I have a .280 I use for deer and a 30-30 to choose from. The .280 would probably be the better choice, but I bought the 30-30 close to 15 years ago for just this type of work and due to kids, house, work etc I never got around to it. So the 30-30 has a lot of sentiment bundled with it. Any advice on which weapon? There are plenty of guided hunts in the Paso Robles area, and around King City, but they are not cheap. Try a book store that sells Hunting & Fishing News etc. for phone numbers. I would go for the 30/30 as my choice as it is lite, and quick on the sights, but go for the new high energy ammunition on the market. Any advice on which weapon? : Thanks for the input, : Randy It depends on the cover. if you intend to shoot out beyond a hundred yards ,of course the .280 is a flatter shooting and thus better choice. However I’ve taken a number of hogs with an old beatup Glenfield ( Marlin 336) .30-30 over the years. It stops them just fine despite what some folks will attempt to tell you. For off the shelf ammo I really like the old reliable 170 grain Silvertips and I handload a lot of flatnose 170s for hogs and 130s and 150s for deer and coyotes. Anyhow the .30-30 is a decent close cover caliber ,as usual it comes down to bullet placement and shot selection. I do a lot of close cover hunting with handguns so I have a tendency to work around for the best shot I can get anyway. B.
