Mystery snake! in '96 EB
Question:
but it’s doubful that anyone would pull the mic, and take the time to put a rubber cap on the end of the wire. It’s an antenna for Keyless entry / alarm, bet ya money. .

Response:
If you get a chance, go look at the antenna for an "Auto Command" branded remote starter……. look around some, maybe you have a nice option you didn’t realize – ’bout $30 for a new remote transmitter (if the rest of it’s there). — Jim Warman

Who said they were going to recover it. GPS antenna cable? Soames "Never Mind World Peace, Visualize Using Your Turn Signal"

A good noise cancelling mic is not exactly cheap. If I was pulling a hands free kit in a commercial shop, I would probably pull the mic just for the appearance of complete work. Abandoning the wire in place means that I don’t have to do much work removing panels. But of course, the wire could be something totally different. Just an opinion.

Response:
I put a "Code Alarm" aftermarket alarm in mine, and it has what sounds like your description for the antenna. do you have the "factory" keyless entry, or not ? does it have 3 buttons that say lock, unlock, and a red one that says panic ?

Response:
Good thought, Bruce, but it sure doesn’t look like any microphone I’ve ever seen. There are no apertures in the end, or along the length. I’m still operating under the theory it’s an antenna, either for the remote entry, or now that I think about it, what about the compass? Chris ‘96 EB ‘92 XLT

Hmmm, recover and reuse the mic on replacement vehicle while abandoning wire in place is not unlikely. The electronic compasses have the magnetic field sensors on the pc board. Neat little gadgets.

Response:
Okay, I bought a ‘96 EB, just in time to go elk hunting in CO. As I’m driving it home, I notice a strange cable coiled/hidden above the auxiliary(?) sun visor. When I pulled it out at a stoplight to take a better look, this is what I found. It appears from under the top of the plastic interior trim inside the A pillar, driver’s side. The cable is black, very flexible, very thin (1/16th inch) coax cable abt. 18" long, then turns to clear, stiff plastic with center conductor inside for abt. 6", with a black plastic cap on end. Shrink tube on junction between end of outer insulator/shield and clear plastic insulator. Whatnhell is it? And if you can answer that, do you know where it’s supposed to hide? For now, I have tucked it into the interior trim above the driver’s door, leaving the end out where I can get to it if I need to pull it out again, without taking the trim off. My best guess, it’s the antenna for the key fob/remote unlock/panic switch, and I replaced it right where it should be, I just didn’t tuck it in enough. (Yet.)
