Any SW Wash. Elk hunters?
Question:
Interested in methods of hunting these beasts in this thick and wet terrain. I hunted blacktail in Lewis county last October, and saw some elk sign but nary one elk. I hear Willipa Hills and Ryderwood are better areas. I’d like to hear any hunting methods or stories. The guys i work with here who hunt elk usually hunt the Blue Mountains or sometimes hunt up past the lava beds above Carson. SW Washington is a great place to hunt elk. Most of the land is owned by timber companies and are under lock and key most of the year but are usually opened during hunting season. The Willapa hills is also one of the last places in the state where a person can kill a branch antlered bull w/o a permit. In my opinion its probabley one of the last good places to hunt elk in the state and many of the herds haven’t been ravaged by overharvest yet. Good luck, a little scouting around the Pe-Ell area should get you going. Elk hunting is very good in SW Washington it probabley has one of the highest hunter success rates in the state. Most of the land in the Willapa Hills is under lock and key most of the year and then usually opened during hunting season. The area between Lebam and Pe-Ell is a very good area, there are a lot of clearcuts with many elk. I hunt on the top of the divide there and we have gotten nice bulls the last two years. I have hunted elk all over the state and this is my favorite elk area. I live in S.W. Wash. and hunt in and play in the area that you are talking about. I bow hunt and my wife rifle hunts and both seasons are so over crowded now that it’s just about impossible to hunt. My advice would be to do what I’ve started to do now and find some where that has elk and you are able to get away from the crowd, ( I would give you some suggestions but then their would be people there too). I don’t know if you have spent much time around here in elk season, but it looks like a K.O.A. camp ground and you have to pull off the logging roads constantly to make room for the passing traffic, It’s not like they are going to move over for you. What ever you decide, there’s not much to compare to elk hunting. > Elk hunting is very good in SW Washington it probabley has one of the > highest hunter success rates in the state.
