Of course, suitability would depend on what you intended to hunt with the rifle, and then what load you comtemplate using.  I have found the 7mm/08 with the 140 grain Remington loads, to be quite effective on deer here in Fla. Very true, but the short barrels loose a lot of the potential of the round. I have a Rem BDL in this caliber and get 2950 out of the Nosler  140 g bullet ,  3125 out of the 120 grain bullet > If you’re thinking about shooting heavier bullets through it, like 160 grn > and up, (elk) and are intent on a 7mm bullet, get a .280 Remington or even > a 7 Mag.  Like its parent case, the .308, the 7-08 can’t handle the heavier > rounds that an ‘06 case can.  If you are thinking about portability, will > keep shots to no more than 300 yards,

If you look at the charts, and the numbers, there is no reason why it will not kill at 500 yds, out of the longer barrel guns, the numbers are better than the 308 and even the 30/06 with similar bullet weights out past 300 yds.  I wouldn’t choose it as the best choice at long range shooting, but I also wouldn’t turn down a long, non moving, lasered target  (lasered meaning shot with range finder first) > and only want to hunt the game > mentioned above, grab the 7-08.  It’s incredibly accurate and a wonderfully > balanced cartridge.

AMEN, My 308’s, 270’s, 30/06, 7 mag, and 243 are gathering dust in the safe , while I hunt with the 708 Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Put simply, the 7mm08 is a great deer rifle.  Very accurate (from the parent 308) Mild recoil and knock em down dead power out to modest ranges. I bought mine two years ago and have killed several deer in a couple of States. None needed a second shot and none got more than 40 yards.  Now, my friends who had asked, "What the hell cartridge is that?", are now saying, "I gotta get me one of them." I had a blued model 7 remington; good gun, good cartridge … I don’t think it gets much better for deer hunting, but I’d pick the stainless one, more for the 20" barrel and synthetic stock than for the finish. I didn’t have it real long … I put a B&C stock on it, which was real clubby.  Did manage to shoot a buck or two, though, with handloads using the 140 grain Nosler solid base, and it did a real fine job.
