Sonora is on the western edge of the Edwards plateau. The are is very hilly with an arid-type of feel to it (lots of mesquite & cedar). The number of deer in the area is not quite as high as the mid-Texas hill country, but it’s nothing to shake a stick at – many people tag 4 deer in one day. The quality (size) of the deer is very much dependant on the ranch you are hunting and the type of management program they have in place. I have hunted within 30 miles of Sonora for about 11 years. The country will have mesquite flats, cedar ridges, live oak bottoms and a mixture of all three in the same place. If your after meat you may be able to tag out in a day or two. If your more trophy oriented it will take a lot more time. I only hunt with a bow and in 11 seasons I’ve taken 33 deer and a lot of turkey. If there’s a good acorn crop hunt the live oaks. They provide good cover and your in the middle of one of the best food sources for the deer that time of year. There can be large deer in the area if the ranches have managed for them. P&Y can be found but don’t count on any B&C. Without knowing more it’s hard to say much more but good luck! Dwayne

Everything depends on
who’s ranch you are hunting, size, what part of the county, and if you are using a guide or establishing a new lease. Let me know general area of the county, i.e. 277n, 277s, 864, I-10 etc. And I could be of some more assistance. As well as, guiding you to sparce, but great entertainment. I have not been there recently. I have however hunted in just about every direction from Sonora. Tell me which area or ranch and I may be able to give more info. I generally like the Sonora area, except for being nearly 450 to downtown Sonora from where I live in east Texas. : I will have an opportunity to hunt in Sonora Texas this year for the first : time. : Does anyone have any info on the deer hunting there? : Abundance, quality, terrain, etc. I’ve hunted in Sutton County the past two years and seen a good many deer, but nothing that was particularly big. On average, according to the information provided at the annual hunter’s banquet in Sonora, the land supports a deer for every 11 acres. There are also loads of turkey and one morning someone a javelina on our lease, so they also exist (but not in large numbers). Sonora is very hunter friendly and I have enjoyed my time there immensely. If you have the opportunity, it is a good place to go—especially if you are primarily hunting for meat. Just be sure to buy turkey tags if you go, because they are wonderful freebies! Cheers, David Curry Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
