Hunting Wisconsin
Question:
Wisconsin offers very good Whitetail deer hunting. The bowhunting begins middle of september until middle of november. Gun deer season begins the saturday before Thanksgiving and ends the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Muzzleloader season begins the immediate Monday until the following Sunday. Bowhunting also resumes the Saturday of the last two days of muzzleloader season and runs until December 31. The deer rut falls in november varing due to the cycle of the full moons, etc. (opening a big debate here!) Wisconsin also offers deer crop damage permits to farmers whose crops are damaged by deer. You may ask the Department of Natural Resources of Wisconsin for this list of farmers who were issued tags. If the farmer still has any they give them out free. The average age of registered Wisconsin bucks are 1 1/2 years. But there are big ones out there. The average registered gun deer kill for the last few years has been around 250,000 deer. You may group hunt for gun deer but not for bowhunting. (Another big debate!) Meaning you may legally shot my deer when gun hunting but not when bowhunting. As far as calibers, a wide assortment is used. From .257 Roberts on up. Terrain is mixed between flat land to small hills to steep coulies. Nothing to high, nothing to low. Mixtures of hard woods, pines, swamps, praries, etc. depending on where in the state you go. It is hard to find private land to gun deer hunt on. But there are county, state and national forests open to the public. I hunt both private and public lands and have good success on both. It is a little easier to find private land to bowhunt deer on, but not much easier. Most people do not hunt late season bow hunting in December but baiting is legal to hunt with and it does wonders during late season. It is fairly easy to find private land to turkey and goose hunt on. Turkeys are also plentiful in Wisconsin. The lower 2/3 of the state offer turkey hunting seasons in the spring and fall. There are six 5 day seasons starting in middle April until middle of May. You need to apply by the previous December 10th. Fall season is early October until early November. One month long season which you need to apply for. When appling you need to pick a zone within the state. The zones overlap counties so you need to know where you can hunt ahead of time. Bear hunting is by a points earned / lottery system. It takes about 5 years to gain enough points to recieve a bear kill permit. You can use bait or dogs. You can set up bait sights yourself on public forest lands. My brother-in-law did and had several sights being hit by bears and score on one nice one with his bow. Goose hunting is good, on a come back. Others will have to fill you in on ducks. On good option when purchasing your hunting/fishing license is to purchase a Patron License. It costs $110 and covers bowhunting, gun hunting, fishing, turkey hunting, pheasant hunting, goose hunting, duck hunting, etc. In Wisconsin many permits are handed out by a lottery system. You must fill out a permit request card and mail it in. So many are drawn for kill tags. Extra antlerless deer, special goose zones, turkey, bear are done this way. The advantage of the Patron License is the DNR will mail the permit application cards freely to you direct and you should never miss an application deadline. Otherwise you have to remember to go the sporting goods store and buy one for $3 for each permit. Any more questions just send them to:

In terms of seasons and license information I would refer you to www.dnr.state.wi.us this is a homepage maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Natural resources. The main hunting in Wisconsin depends on where in the state your family is moving. Deer are plentiful every where, but the legal firearm depends on the area of the state. South western WI has a good pheasant population, the north has great grouse, better in the north west. Ducks or geese can be found throughout the state.
