Pheasants in S.D./Guncharge Per day

Question:

..  Do you think this is too much per person per day to >hunt birds?  Afterall, this isn’t opening day/weekend/week?  Thanks for >your thoughts in advance.

Up here in Ontario I pay $400.00 Can .for twenty birds on a game farm and they are as wild as any wild birds I used to hunt, many years ago when there were wild birds around. And $15.00 per leftover or extra birds each, above the 20 birds. Not too bad when you consider the alternative, no hunting pheasants at all.Two hundred acres of ideal pheasant cover too/And he will release them where you want them so you don`t have to walk too far, but some days I still put in two hours per bird. I have had a hip replacement and am 64 years old, so for me this is a good deal, and we get no barbecue. I don`t know what the limit is in SD but it doesn`t sound too bad a price to me if you want to hunt. With out of state 5 day licences at $95 per gun, that makes for an expensive dove shoot.  I don’t know?? J Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

Down South a few places will charge in the $100.00 range but they at least thrown in a free BarB.Q.  I forgot to mention that this is for 1st. day dove shoots over baited fields.  The fields have set long enough to be legal. I haven’t been dove shooting in years because I refuse to pay the price. >We have a good small group of bird hunters (six) who have been hunting >together for many years.  One of the guys is putting together a trip for >the first/second week in Huron, S.D. wherewe will be hunting some >"friends of a friend’s" large farm.  The farmers want to charge us >$100.00 dollars a person per day guncharge for the right to hunt their >lands.  That’s 500 dollars per person for the five days.  Let me ask the >group a question.  Do you think this is too much per person per day to >hunt birds?  Afterall, this isn’t opening day/weekend/week?  Thanks for >your thoughts in advance.

Dear Rob and Group — The discussion withstanding, don’t you all agree that for $80-100 per day you should be getting SUPREME service.  C’mon, we are talking about an agricultural product, birds.  It is not as if each bird is tended to gingerly by the landowner.  Granted, some fellows do "augment" their flocks with bought birds, but even so, I can shoot a half dozen strong fliers (twice the SD daily limit) in Virginia for $100, with a guide and top notch dogs. My mother lives in Rapid city, so I have had some access to great Area 2 land over the last three years and to some CRP.  I found the CRP to be of marginal to good and the private land was excellent — conditions and birds or not, the daily limit still stands at three cock birds.  I have enjoyed photographing my dog almost as much as the wingshooting, so I get a lot of bang for my buck. Ultimately, I am disappointed in the path that is being run by large holding landowners in the West with regard to hunting, hunting laws and conservation. Rightfully so, they feel that their land is theirs to do with as they wish. But, simply putting up a wire fence does not create a sovreign State that is immune or above the laws – of good sense, decency or otherwise. A $100 a day may be affordable for one person but if you have a son you’d like to take along also it can get pretty steep. Unfortunatly hunting will only be available to those who are better off. You have actually asked a couple of questions here.  The most pressing appears to be whether or not "the group" thinks this is too much for the right to hunt.  Personally, yes, I think it is too much.  However, $80 – $150/per gun/per day is common.  I am a SD resident, and we see this type and cost of access granted regularly.  The vast majority of SD residents are not willing to pay that much for hunting rights, so we are limited to Public Access land or (sometimes) the land belonging to a friend (or road hunting, of course…).  The willingness of some to pay those types of access fees does impact the access I personally have to some hunting land (since I am unwilling to pay that much…)  Given that, I do think $100/day is too much. As for the timing, being not the opening day/ week/ whatever.  There may be a little less of a demand, but if the augument is being made that the landowner is selling a crop or product (access to land where pheasant grow….), then he can ask what the market will bear.  I would not expect you to suffer from lack of birds.  The times I have had access to good private land late in the season still resulted in days seeing hundreds or thousands of birds. As much as I hate being confronted with access fees of that much, I tend to side with the landowner when it comes to questions of his being able to charge it.  It is his land, and the landowner has probably spent a considerable amount of time and money making sure his land is well suited for ringnecks.  He is trying to maximize his land and raise a crop to make his living. Now, if I were from somewhere other than SD, I might think the $100/gun/day would not be too much, since I would expect a memorable experience for my money.  I would expect that if you do go, you will have the time of your life.  Many of the landowners go out of their way to make sure your experience is more than just jumping out of your truck and shooting a few birds.  I am sure you will have a wonderful time.
