caliber for moose???
Question:
Over here I`m quite a weirdo, since I`m a keen shooter and handgunner, but I dont hunt. well the moose season has just started and I was invited for a hunt. They told me to bring my own gun and I need a powerful hunting rifle anyway, so which calibers would you recommend for moose?? Please nothing too exotic, since rare calibers a very expensive (though you can get them easily) Please Hurry!!! Thanks a lot!!! You’re in Finland I see… A 30-06 will do, and a 308 win is more than enough for Scandinavian Moose – and you have access to cheap training ammo. If you’re looking for something with more power, I’d suggest a 300 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag, or maybe the 338 Lapua Magnum (which is a Finnish calibre…) On the other hand, the 9,3×62 is a quite common calibre in Scandinavia, and isn’t a bad choice either. Although it hasn’t the trajectory of a 30-06 for example… Jonis — Jonis —- — http://home.sol.no/~sbragsta/ —- — Member of The Huntingtrail —- Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at: http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/ To leave the Hunting listserv list, send a message with SIGNOFF HUNTING

Anything form the .30-06 on the light end up to the .338 on the heavy end should do nicely. The 6.5×55 is popular and traditional choice of moose hunters in Scandinavia. Other good choices might include the .30′06 or the 9.3×62mm. To avoid an impulse purchase perhaps you can borrow a rifle chambered for a cartridge that your hosts recommend and which is inexpensive to feed. Good hunting!

My recomendation is a 30 06 or the better choice is a .338 winchester mag. but what ever you get make shore you can shoot straite I see too many people go over. A .270 is better if you can hit the boiler room. I live in Central Ontario, Canada and I have found that the .308 Win works exceptionally well for moose. .308 comes in a decent variety of weight and bullet configureations too. Here in west Quebec it seems that every other hunter (myself included) uses .303brit. Tim.

To concur bullet place met is mutch more important then velocity Remember that a .50 or .54 caliber round ball black powder riffle is no better then a .44 mag pistol I shoot both. A 30-40 crag works wonders and a 308 win with a 200 grain bullet is the same thing. To the moose!! These three are by far the most popular in Scandinavia. The latter is supposed to be too light by some, but statistics show it is just as good as the other two. An explanation might be that people tend to shoot more accurately with this cartridge, recoil being light. This is the caliber I use myself. Varying bullets and loads, it is ideal for most Scandianivian game. Some hunters prefer the heavier 9,3×62 cartridge. While the animals statistically run about 40-45 meters in average after being hit by 308, 30-06 or 6,5×55, they run about 30-35 meters after a 9,3×62 hit. This caliber is also preferred by Norway’s only professional bear hunter! Considering the larger size of North American moose, I suppose it would make sense to use this caliber. Unlike caliber, good quality bullets are of extreme importance. Norma’s new Oryx and Swift are the best I know of. Good luck! A.J.
