Cover Scent?

Question:

I hunt with a Thompson .50 cal Hawken (275 gr conical with 80 gr pyrodex)  I’ve hunted for 6 seasons and have taken 4 deer, 2 doe and 2 8 pt bucks, all at less than 35 yards, one was at 17 yards. I have always focused on cover scents that are normally found in the area, along with elimination of the human odor.  I like to store my coveralls in a bag with dirt, grass, and leaves from the site and will roll on the ground on the way to my ground stand (can’t stand a tree!) I started raising rabbits a few years ago and since there is a large cottontail population in the area that I hunt, I am wondering about the viability of using domestic rabbit urine (collected during butchering, poured straight from bladder to sterilized glass jar) as a cover scent.  I wonder if the deer can tell the difference between domestic rabbit urine and that of a cottontail? The rabbits are of different species and they cannot interbreed, but their eating habits are almost identical. Any comments? The only way is to find it out for your own self. Don’t take anyone else’s word for it ~then that way you will know if it really works or not-Try it before or after season~GOOD LUCK R–E–B Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/

You need to go to a good Bow Hunting Store.  They have a product now that you can wipe a Onion all over your hands or a Marker on paper or whatever & spray this stuff on it & ALL the odor is gone immediately.  It is absolutely amazing.  I don’t know what it is called but the Hunter store will know.  It comes in soap & laundry detergents & spray so it will save you alot of hassle.

Two guys I know off do this very thing.  They raise rabbits for pets and for food.  each one has about 100-150 at any given time.  They say they have no problems with the deer.  I am planning on using the urine as a cover for coyotes come May 15th.  These guys have done this for about 20 years. dscotty Visit the rec.hunting and rec.hunting.dogs FAQ Home Page at:         http://sportsmansweb.com/hunting/
