Light transmission is governed by the objective divided by the magnification. As long as this is over 5mm, you’re transmitting all the light your eye can see. A 5-6X top end does fine at 32mm, but if you get it in a 20mm objective, you’ll notice it’ll darken a bit when the magnification goes above 4X. My 3.5- 10X 40mm objective begins to darken at 8X. My 1.5-5X 20mm objective darkens at 4X. Whether or not 6X is sufficient at 250 meters depends on what you want to see at that range. At that range, 6X is plenty to place the shot, but it might not be enough to count the points or to distinguish the buck you want from the one next to it. If I’m being really picky about which deer I shoot, I crank up to 10X and have a final look before the shot at those ranges. If it’s a bit dark, I only turn up to 8X because I lose light beyond that. I have a 6x Leupold on a 270 Win. I shoot groundhogs as far as 300 yds with it. The longest shot I ever made (deer at 350 yds) was with a 4x. I am considering replacing the 6x with a variable (2-7?) to get more view at close range. How much cheaper is this Vari X III in 1.75 – 6X than Leupold LPS 1.5 – 6×42? I’m plannin a bear hunting safari to Olonets, Russia next fall. We are going to hunt in high seats at night time. I find this LPS 1.5 – 6x 42 more suitable for this kind of hunting and also for stalking when there may be very fast shooting situations. It has a wider field for short shooting distances. Typically the distances are less than 50 yards, maybe 10 to 20 yards. But a bigger objective may also mean better light gathering capability. This LPS 1.5 – 6x 42 scope is very expensive here in Finland as well as the other similar scopes (Swarowski, Kahles, Zeiss, …). I’m very interested to know, what is the lowest price for this scope in U.S. My friend from California is joining us for the bear safari and he could bring one scope for me when he comes here. hi there, when you will hunt in the dark, you should go for a high quality at least 8 x 50 or 4-12×50 vari in germany we hunt very often in the dark, so nobody uses a ?x40 here, most rifles in the past 3-4 years has also put on a scope with a dot in it to see the cross during the night — worldwide: www.earnincomenow.de (!!! for further info use code: M L S H ) Deutschland: www.jetztgeldverdienen.de (!!! f
