KANSAS WHITETAILS
Question:
>>I read in a magazine that Kansas was to restrict out of state
to doe only tags. This was in one of the outdoor mags a few years back, as Kansas’s answer to other states reciprocity laws. (Kansas didn’t allow non-residents, so other states said if our people can’t hunt in your state, your’s can’t in ours). What ever happened with this? — They started allowing non-residents to buy any deer tags about 3 years ago. They are real expensive and a little limited in number. Steve Jones
Response:
>>I’m interested in hunting Kansas for whitetails this fall. My question >– is a do-it-yourself hunt possible for non-residents there? Any >advice on this question would be much appreciated. I’ve talked to >people who’ve gone out to pheasant hunt and said it was real tough to >get access.
Mark: My mail service strips out headers, so I don’t have your address to reply to directly. I wish people would put their addresses in a tagline (grrr) Anyway, this may be of interest to the general readers… KS tags are a little limited and a lot expensive (one tag only per non-res, $250, buck or doe) as I recall – but check with the KS Fish & Game folks to be sure. I’d bet you could get permission if you had enough time to drive around and knock on doors well before the season, but that isn’t really practical for us non-residents. There is a club (I am a member) that leases A LOT of KS (& MO & IA & IL & NE) ground, and since most of the club members are not KS residents and, like me, not thrilled with the $250 tag fee, we don’t deer hunt there. But there is some simply wonderful whitetail property there. I saw a real REAL monster non-typical (his right antler a very large normal side with his left antler completely downswept and looking nearly like a spaghetti helmet) on club property while pheasant hunting in Jewell county for instance (lots of torn up rut sign in the area), and got a glimpse of a typical that even the landowner thought was a huge typical buck (in my glimpse I’d guess 165") in another county (I can’t remember the name of that county off the top of my head – it was an hour or so north of Topeka – but if you join I’ll be happy to look it up and tell you the exact property). Anyway, the club only charges something around $400 for a year for a single-state membership (I’m not exactly sure), though they’ve got a steep one-time initiation fee – something like $700 but I’m not sure. You’d have to call them if you are interested. Contact me directly and I’ll give you the number. An expensive proposition, but I think it’s a legitimate chance at a once-in-a-lifetime buck. At least more than the leases the club has in MO, though those are good too. Just not world-class like the KS leases. Steve Jones
Response:
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN THE WHITETAIL SEASON IS OPEN IN NORTH WESTERN KANSAS? I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HUNT THERE THIS YEAR, BUT I NEED TO START PLANNING FOR THE TRIP.
Response:
Archery season begins the first of October and the firearms season begins the Wednesday after Thanksgiving (December 3rd) if everything holds the same as last year. Good Hunting Jeff
